So I found an old Mopar block buried in my yard.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Problem is I’ve been having trouble identifying it. Casting number leads me to thinking it’s a 383 but the casting date reads 72. Last year for 383 was 71. Hmmm
After multiple attempts to get something off the data stamp I gave up. Pencil rubbing didn’t help at all but a few numbers were found but nothing I could piece together. (See adventures in quarantine part 2) I really think it’s been ground off, more on that later. I had wanted to measure the bore, so I ordered a battery for my old digital calipers. Well I either ordered the wrong battery or my 20 year old calipers be broken. Oh well plan 2.
While not being accurate still better than the tape measure. 4.1 or abouts. Still not really helpful but kinda rules out a 400.
Off to the forums!
According to this. I think this confirms it’s a 383 block since my block doesn’t have the strengthening rib along the freeze plugs.
So I think I can confidently say it’s a 383 block. What it is actually is another matter. A 383 mopar bore should be 4.25. I may be off on my measurements but 150 thou. seems like alot. Pretty close to a 361 but the casting date of 72 doesn’t seem right but Chrysler at the time probably didn’t waste much. A guy at allpar said it might be a 361 truck block but information was hard to find. So I probably won’t know until I get the crank out.
Hmmm if can get it out. That might be awhile. Anyways the local rumor in the neighborhood is that back in the 60s and 70s the people that owned my property ran a little chop shop. I’ve pulled car parts out of the woods before . One of my first Oppo posts was me pulling pieces of a old Ford van out of there. So I decided to go a little deeper in the woods to see what I could find.
Wow several cars rusted so bad it’s hard to tell what they were. The yellow pieces are some of the van. Tons of trim and even more rust oh and a battery nice.
I pulled some of the more interesting pieces out. The door sill says Plymouth and was found by the burgundy tail light anyone know what it is? The dually fender is a Chevy but the rest?
Weird back window too. My woods have always been a good bottle mine but damn this is too much.

Its amazing how murky and confusing it can be to identify parts made only ~50 years ago. Are these scraps really all thats left of whole cars? Or do you think panels and some chopped off bits just got hucked out there?

Makes you wonder how deeply they buried the stuff they really didn’t want being found.

Have you thought about rebuilding the block into an engine?

The burgundy fragment is a taillight and surrounding body work from a '62 or '63 Falcon. Probably cut up the body and threw the few pieces they couldn't sell out into the woods.

It’s a pretty wet area with a ton of dead wood. The burgundy car looks mostly there but rusted to oblivion and buried under fallen wood. The area where the battery and the red panel looked mostly there but just in piece’s . Ton of rubber bits and wire. Its really hard to say. The dually panel I tripped over the tip , dug it out along with a cache of bottles and wadded up aluminum.

Good one. That seems like just a shell no evidence of doors so yeah.

You’ d be surprised , getting both surfaces decked and the bore honed may do the trick. Obviously the other threaded holes and oil/coolant passages needs to be cleaned...but if no metal is broken off, it be one of hell of a project/story.

I wonder how much you could get for scrap if you spent a couple days hauling stuff out of there.

Honestly think if I could get 50 cents a bottle, I’d get more cash.
Most pieces of metal are rusted so bed they just come out as flakes of rust.
